Tiananmen Rostrum (Gate of Heavenly Peace) was originally built in 1417 as the main gate of the former imperial city of Ming Dynasty, it was named Chengtianmen. But it was rebuilt and renamed for several times, and the Qing Dynasty Emperor Shunzhi bestowed the name 'Gate of Heavenly Peace'. Im Ming and Qing Dynasties, grand ceremonies were held at Tiananmen Rostrum during important occasions, such as emperor's enthronement, emperors conferred honorable titles to empresses, and crown princes.  On October 1st, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed to the whole world the founding of the People's Republic of China on the Tiananmen Rostrum, at the same time, about 300,000 people attended the grand ceremony on the Tiananmen Square.
Tiananmen Square occupies an area of 44 hectares (or 122 acres), it is the bigest city central square in the world.
At the northern end of the square, it is the national flag pole, with the hight of 32.6 meters. On the 1st, 11th and 21st every month and on other important dates, special ceremonies of national flag raising and lowering would be practised, the time for flag raising is varied every day based on the sunrise, while the flag lowering is in accordance with the sunset. When raising the flag, the national anthem is played by the military band (tape record will be played on ordinary days), the solemn ceremony attracts thousands of travellers to watch every morning.
The monument to the People's Heroes is almost at the center of the square, the 37.94-meter high monument was designed by the famous architect Mr. Liang Sicheng, and was started to build on Auguest 1st 1952. It is constructed by 17,000 pieces of granite and marble slabs, that's to remember the people's heroes who laid down their lives in the wars.
The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall stands at the south of the Monument to the People's Heroes. It was opened to public on September 9th 1977 to mark the annivesary of Chaiman Mao's passing away, then continue to open for free, Chariman Mao's remains reclined in a crystal coffin, with a flag of the Communist Party of China draped over his body for people from all over the country to pay their respects to the late Chairman Mao.
East of the square is the National Museum of China, the museum displays Chinese history from 1.7 million years ago.
West of the square lies the Great Hall of People, where the annual National People's Congress (NPC) and the National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) held. There are three parts inside of the hall, the Banquet Hall in the north could accommodate 5,000 people, and the central Grand Auditorium has 10,000 seats, in the south area are the offices for the NPCSC. As many as 300 reception rooms and conference halls with various sizes and different decoration.
