Panjiayuan Antique Market was a spontaneous roadside market started from 1992, people from all over the country come to trade the folk antiques and handiwork, this market became the most important place for Chinese antique collectors to select their collections, many of them even believe that they started their career at Panjiayuan.
After ten year development, the market was elected one of the top ten antique markets in China at the prize-awarding ceremony of the first Annual Top Ten Lists of Collection in China in 2004.
Now, the Panjiayuan Market covers an area of 48,500 square meters, in its indoor malls, there are jewlery such as emerald, gem, white jade, agate and other precious stones; folk handicrafts like snuff bottles, bamboo, wood, or bone carvings, shadow play masks; traditional stationery, ancient books, paintings, calligraphic works, Buddhist articles; the four precious articles of the writing table in ancient China (writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper); traditional furniture; Chinese and foreign ancient coins; other precious antiques like boccaro wares, bronze wares, porcelain, pottery and so on.
But the most special and attractive thing at Panjiayuan is the weekend flea market, it is the biggest flea market in Asia, it opens from the early morning to the late afternoon, owners have a small area each, and they just put their stuff on the floor, all you can see on the flea market are the folk antiques and folk handicrafts, some of these stuff are the owners family heirlooms, collectors crouch down to select a real antique or something they like.
Every weekend, as many as 70,000 people visit Panjiayuan Antique Market each day, over 10,000 are foreign visitors. People from all over the world come to here to buy antiques or just visit, even some important foreign politicians had been to here, which are U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Romanian Prime Minister Nastase, Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Thai Princess Sirindhorn and other celebrities.
